How to help Newtown, Connecticut - December 16, 2012

I live 20 minutes from Newtown. Some of the teachers who teach in our schools live there. I have no words to express the profound horror and shock that I am feeling. My heart breaks for those who lost a loved one and my thoughts are with everyone in Newtown.

I've tired to collect here a few ways to help the folks in Newtown if you are so inclined.

My Sandy Hook Family Fund
The “My Sandy Hook Family Fund" has been established by local Sandy Hook, CT parents and friends dedicated to providing immediate and continuing support for the 26 families of those who lost children and loved ones in the Sandy Hook School tragedy.
This fund was established on December 16, 2012. You may donate here.

Newtown Memorial Fund
The Newtown Memorial Fund mission is three-fold:
  1. Short term: To provide financial relief for funeral expenses of those who perished in the Sandy Hook Elementary School Massacre of December 14, 2012.
  2. Mid term: To assist the town with the design, placement and funding to donate a suitable lasting memorial for our Community for those we lost.
  3. Ongoing: To provide an annual scholarship fund to students of the Newtown Public Schools who will be going on to college. A full criteria will be developed and voted on by the board. Administration of this task will be the ongoing legacy of the memorial fund, hopefully for generations to come.
You may donate here.  You may also find the Newtown Memorial Fund on Facebook.

The Sandy Hook School Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of Connecticut

The Sandy Hook School Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of Connecticut will help support the college costs for any siblings of those killed in the assault, the dependents of adults who also lost their lives, as well as students currently enrolled at the elementary school, who are accepted to attend the University.
...
Donations will be collected through the University of Connecticut Foundation to establish a fund in anticipation of supporting the siblings and dependents of those who died, and Sandy Hook Elementary School students in the K-4 grades today who will be of college age beginning in approximately 2021. Available funds that have been collected by that time will be awarded to eligible recipients on the basis of financial need. If any funds remain once the needs of the groups above have been met, they will be used to benefit future students from Newtown who attend UConn.
